Database Builder is returning ‘File Write Failure’ and ‘File Access Denied’ error messages

SUMMARY

When building data, Database Builder goes through a sequence of steps in the build process in order to function correctly and to ensure that the final built data is correctly built. Explained very generally, these include:

  • Reading of input and configuration files
  • The creation of intermediate .dtf files, built files and logs
  • The cleaning up process where files are moved to their final locations

In order for this process to be carried out, Database Builder requires a large amount of free hard disk space and full permissions, i.e. admin rights. When either one or both of these preconditions are not met, Database Builder will throw errors.

SYMPTOMS

The build will fail to complete and the XML log file will contain error messages similar to the ones in the following screenshot:

SOLUTIONS

1. Check the amount of free space available

You will need to take a look at the amount of hard disk space available and ensure you have enough to be able to carry out the type of build you are attempting to run. For a full NLPG, we recommend that you have at least 100GB hard disk space and for a change only build at least 60GB. Here we are referring to the amount of free space available and not total space available.

2. Check permissions

You will need to ensure that the user has sufficient permissions when running Database Builder as it needs to be able to read input files, create new working and built files and move files into different directories. We therefore recommend that the user running Database Builder have administrator rights.
