Summary

When attempting to do an address lookup via the ASP sample pages that are supplied with Pro Web UK (versions 3.x), carrying out an address lookup using the building number/name and the postcode (i.e. the standard prompt set) will result in a unique match with no errors.

However, when you do not know the postcode, and attempt to carry out an address lookup using the building name/number, street, and the town or county, Pro Web will display a message saying ‘Too many matches’, despite there only being one unique match.

Symptoms:

On the ASP sample pages, carrying out an address lookup using all three prompt sets (‘Building Name or Number’, ‘Street’, and ‘Town or County’) of the ‘Don’t Know Postcode’ form, will result in an error message being presented above the form saying ‘Too many matches’. This may seem to be puzzling, since in many cases, this error will occur, despite the fact that there shouldn’t appear to be too many matches returned from the data that is inputted.

The screenshot below demonstrates the error:

Solution

1. Locate the Server ini file

You will need to locate the ini file that is used by the QuickAddress Network Server. This file is called qansrv.ini, and is located in the windows system32 folder (i.e. c:\windows\system32). Once you have located the file, open it by double-clicking it (it should open in windows notepad).

2. Edit the Server ini file

Once you have located and opened the qansrv.ini file, scroll down until you find the following line:

MaxPostcodes=30

Once you have located this line, completely remove it from the file, then save all changes, and close the ini file.

3. Restart the QAS Service

Open Windows Services by clicking the start menu, selecting ‘Run…’, typing in ‘services.msc’, and clicking ‘OK’. Once the Windows Services has opened, scroll down until you located the ‘QuickAddress Network Service’. Right click this server, and select ‘Restart’. The image below demonstrates this:

Once you have done this, you will be able to carry out an address lookup, as before, but without receiving the ‘Too many matches’ error.
